Fair Food
Dine with Dignity (Fall 2009 to Spring 2010)
We are currently working on a campaign for ethical food at UH in solidarity with a grassroots organization of tomato farm workers in Florida, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW). They have been organizing since 1993 for higher wages and ethical conditions in the fields that produce the food the United States lives off of.
We are working towards our foodservice provider Aramark, and the second largest grocery retailer in the country, Kroger, to be a part of the solution like several other multinational companies (McDonalds, Taco Bell, Whole Foods, Subway and Aramark’s biggest competitor Compass Group to name a few) already have. We are working as an affiliate of the Student Farmworker Alliance (SFA) for 1 penny per pound more for tomatoes picked to go to farm workers to help lift them out of extreme poverty.
